The Tarpon uses Gold Series 6061 T6 aluminum in its frame. This allows the frame (made with a double heat treat process) to be very thick. The Tarpon also uses Bontrager LT3 ECO tires, enabling fast rolling on both pavement and trails. The hydroformed tubing of the bike is stiff, yet lightweight, striking a balance between durability and weight. When compared to another Trek mountain bike, the Advance, the Tarpon has some disadvantages, including a lower amount of speeds to shift from, and a less advanced breakset. However, they both use similar technology (hydroformed tubing, Bontrager LT3 ECO tires, etc).
